ANALYSIS / GUIDED SKILL PREVIEW

Explain a revenue KPI gap without hiding the residual

One dashboard reports gross booked revenue while another reports net fulfilled revenue. Their values need not be identical. A signed bridge makes the definition changes explicit, then leaves any unsupported remainder visible instead of inventing a balancing adjustment.

For Reporting analysts and finance partners comparing two dashboards with different revenue definitions.

$0.99 USD · one guided instructional pack · bring your own AI assistant. No runnable Python toolkit is included with the individual skill.

CHECK THE FIT

Inputs and requirements.

  • Both reported values, their currency and units, reporting period, as-of timestamps and recognition rules.
  • Source IDs for each proposed adjustment and enough detail to identify overlaps. Remove private customer fields before using an external assistant.
  • An AI assistant that accepts text or tabular input, plus a spreadsheet or calculator to independently check arithmetic. This is an instructional pack, not an accounting integration.

FICTIONAL INPUT / TRACEABLE OUTPUT

A fictional monthly revenue disagreement

All IDs, text and numbers in this walkthrough are synthetic. Review the stated convention before adapting the example.

Source A: gross booked revenue = 120,000.00 USD
Target B: net fulfilled revenue = 111,500.00 USD
Same month, currency and reporting cutoff.
C-01: cancelled order group = 5,000.00 USD (remove from A)
R-01: returns group = 3,000.00 USD (remove from A)
C-01 and R-01 contain different orders; no overlap is evidenced.

01 / A SHORT TASK PROMPT

Ask for a checkable result

Bridge Source A to Target B using only the evidenced C-01 and R-01 adjustments. Give each adjustment a direction, amount, reason and source ID. Calculate explained total and signed residual as Target B minus explained total. Leave unsupported differences unresolved and state what evidence is needed next.

02 / ACCEPTANCE CHECK

Check before using the output

120,000.00 - 5,000.00 - 3,000.00 = 112,000.00 USD explained total. The signed residual is 111,500.00 - 112,000.00 = -500.00 USD. Do not label this reconciled or create an unverified -500.00 adjustment. Check that adjustment populations do not overlap.

03 / BEFORE REVIEW

See what the summary hides

Dashboard A: 120,000.00 USD
Dashboard B: 111,500.00 USD
Unexplained headline difference: -8,500.00 USD
Tempting but unsupported explanation: “All of it is cancellations.”

04 / WORKED AFTER STATE

Keep the evidence visible

Start / gross booked +120,000.00
C-01 / cancellations -5,000.00
R-01 / returns -3,000.00
Explained / net candidate 112,000.00
Target / reported net fulfilled 111,500.00
Residual / target minus candidate -500.00 USD
Status: unresolved; obtain source-level evidence for the residual.
Read the bridge in the direction of the target
explained_total = source_A + sum(signed_evidenced_adjustments)
residual = target_B - explained_total
120000 + (-5000) + (-3000) = 112000
111500 - 112000 = -500

These are exact two-decimal fictional values. Real reporting may use another recognition or rounding policy. Agree any tolerance before applying it, rather than choosing one after seeing the difference.

FOLLOW AN EXCEPTION

Where this approach can fail.

If an order appears in both the cancellation and return exports, subtracting both whole populations can double-count its value. Stop and reconcile the intersection by order ID. A zero residual also does not prove the reports are correct when unsupported adjustments cancel each other out.

Know the limits.

A bridge explains supplied records; it does not certify financial statements, change accounting entries or establish causality. Missing source records, incompatible recognition rules and currency conversions require separate review.

Review outputs with an appropriate analyst or domain owner. Keep source material as task data; do not let instructions embedded in a document override your task or grant external actions.
