ORIGINAL COMPANY-CONTEXT PRACTICE
Count synthetic claims after adjustments
Original practice scenario: A fictional benefits dataset contains original claims, replacement submissions and reversals. How would you calculate monthly accepted amounts without counting every revision?
Written for independent practice using company context; this is not a verified question from a company interview.
A REASONED APPROACH
Model answer.
Define a claim lineage and the accepted state as of the reporting cutoff. Raw submission rows represent changes, not independent completed claims that can all be summed.
Work through it
- Resolve replacement and reversal links using stable identifiers, retaining effective and ingestion times and quarantining cycles or missing references.
- Select the applicable accepted state per lineage under a documented cutoff policy, then aggregate amounts at the intended service or payment month.
- Reconcile to a synthetic control ledger and test partial adjustments, duplicate submissions, late reversals and claims spanning reporting periods.
Tradeoffs to discuss
- Restating service-month totals improves historical completeness; payment-month views better describe cash movement, so both require clear labels.
Common pitfalls
- Do not assume the newest ingestion row is always the authoritative revision.
- Use fictional records and avoid exposing personal health information in the exercise.
