ORIGINAL COMPANY-CONTEXT PRACTICE

Choose a representative device test matrix

Data scienceHardConcept

Original practice scenario: A hypothetical quality team cannot test every combination of device model, region, firmware and network condition. How would you prioritize coverage without hiding rare failures?

Written for independent practice using company context; this is not a verified question from a company interview.

A REASONED APPROACH

Model answer.

Combine risk-based coverage with observed usage rather than testing only the most popular configuration. The sampling unit and coverage gaps should remain visible in every release decision.

Work through it

  1. Inventory supported factors and known interactions, separating mandatory safety or compatibility cases from a sampled exploratory test budget.
  2. Cover high-volume configurations and deliberately include boundary combinations such as older hardware, constrained memory, uncommon locale settings and interrupted networks.
  3. Track failures and uncovered combinations, updating priorities from new evidence while maintaining a stable regression subset for comparisons across releases.

Tradeoffs to discuss

  • Pairwise or interaction-focused designs reduce the matrix size but do not prove the absence of higher-order interactions.

Common pitfalls

  • A configuration with few users may still have severe failure consequences.
  • Do not compare raw pass rates between releases when the tested configuration mix changed substantially.
