ORIGINAL COMPANY-CONTEXT PRACTICE
Produce a consistent hypothetical portfolio view
Original practice scenario: A simulated wealth dashboard combines positions, prices and foreign-exchange rates that refresh independently. How should a snapshot communicate consistency?
Written for independent practice using company context; this is not a verified question from a company interview.
A REASONED APPROACH
Model answer.
A portfolio total is meaningful only with a defined valuation time and completeness policy. Independently latest values can form a combination that never existed as a coherent snapshot.
Work through it
- Version position events and market observations with source and effective times; define acceptable freshness and missing-price behavior before calculating totals.
- Build an immutable valuation snapshot identifying the exact position, price and currency-rate versions, with explicit stale or unavailable components.
- Test delayed feeds, price corrections, corporate-action boundaries and partially unavailable currencies; expose snapshot status alongside its timestamp.
Tradeoffs to discuss
- Waiting for aligned inputs improves comparability but increases latency; provisional snapshots are faster if their limitations remain visible.
Common pitfalls
- Do not replace a missing price with zero without a declared policy.
- Keep the exercise focused on data consistency rather than presenting investment recommendations.
